Today (January 8, 2011) I read an article on Yahoo News about several exciting new small businesses that went out of business recently. One of companies, iParents.com, when under and one of the reason was because they hired a marketing firm in Florida to help them, and as soon as the marketing firm received the money, the marketing firm completely ignored the client and did no work for them. Sadly, I have heard horror stories like this more than once--many our my marketing firm's clients came to us after being cheated by some other marketing firm.
My advice to you is to PLEASE do your homework on a marketing firm before hiring them and paying them. Call the marketing firm's current and past clients. Make sure the marketing firm is a legitimate business that has a great track record of helping its clients. If they don't, DO NOT HIRE THEM!

In late 2009, he hired a marketing company in Florida to do online outreach and run a photo contest to try to get to 100,000 members. He paid $18,000 for the work and never heard from the company again. 'That was the death knell for us,' he said."
