I recently posted a case study on how a client came to us after they had hired a marketing firm that spent $10,000 of the client's money on Google AdWords advertising to send traffic to the client's website but was unable to generate any leads. So, the client hired my firm and I rewrote their home page, making it very simple with strong sales text. Instantly they went from zero leads per day to over 50 leads per day. So, after two outstanding months the client decides to completely redo their home page, even after we told them not to. Guess what? As soon as the new home page went live, the client went from generating over 50 leads per day to less than 5 leads per day. Their cost per lead went from $3.56 (my home page) to over $25.00 per lead with their new fancy home page with tons of bells and whistles.
What is the marketing lesson here? Simple sells. Strong benefit-based sales text sells. Having tons of bells and whistles and talking characters and "garbage" to make your website look super cool does NOT sell. Look at Google. They are by far the most successful website of all time and they are also the most simple website. Google understands the powerful of simplicity. They understand the power of getting to the frigg'n point and not wasting people's time.
