How I create advertising ideas

An advertising writing ritual that I have started over the past year is paging through advertising books to get my brain in the mindset for writing copy. The books I regularly scan though are, “Ogilvy on Advertising”, “When Advertising Tried Harder” and, “Bill Bernbach’s Book.”

The reason why I started doing this was to trigger my brain to generate ideas. Much of the time when writing copy for advertising, my mind enjoys going completely blank. I think it does this to toy with me. So, one day to try and get some ideas I started leafing through my favorite advertising books and instantly I started to get a lot of great ideas. I find that this ritual helps me come up with great ideas very quickly so I stick with it. For me the starting point of actual writing is having the “big idea” to write about, such as a headline. Once I have the big idea, then writing copy is fairly easy.
