We all see a ton of advertising every day, be it TV commercials, magazines, the Internet, etc. Most of it is true - true claims, real testimonials, real statistics, on and on. However, a portion of advertising is bullshit, especially on the Internet. It is lies. The product/service being sold is crap. It does not work, it does not match the marketing hype it was given, and it should not be sold.
Okay Peter, where the heck are you going with this post?
Where I am going with this is if you want to be a long-term success in business (and stay out of jail for fraud), don't lie to your prospects and customers. Don't make false claims. Instead, UNDERSELL and OVER-DELIVER. When you make a marketing claim, make sure it is true and that you would feel comfortable showing your advertising to your parents and your grandparents. If you would not feel comfortable selling your product/service to your family and closest friends because what you sell is garbage, DON'T SELL IT. As the famous adman David Ogilvy said, "The consumer is not a moron, she is your wife." Respect your prospects and customers. Do not lie to them. Do not cheat them. Do not sell anything you would not feel comfortable selling to your wife, girlfriend, husband, sister, brother, mother, father, grandma, grandpa, or best friend.
